Professional Teeth Whitening
A smile tells a lot about a person; dental imperfections can negatively affect one’s confidence. Fortunately, there are several dental procedures to help one feel confident again. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular procedures requested in family dentistry. Whitening treatments are easy, relatively inexpensive and provide quick results.
At Home Teeth Whitening
If you want a quick way to improve your smile, talk to our dentists at ActOn Dentistry about at home teeth whitening. We offer custom whitening trays made to fit each patient’s mouth. Properly fitted trays provide better results due to the whitening agent in direct contact with the patient’s teeth. The whitening agent is at a stronger level than anything that can be bought over the counter, and whitening can be performed at the patient’s own speed and schedule, reducing sensitivity. At home whitening makes it easy to touch up areas in the future without having additional costs or an appointment for in office treatment. We also offer more whitening agent purchases, allowing multiple years of whitening with the same trays.
Types of Stains
Your teeth can get stained by a variety of things. There are two types of stains: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are found on the outer surface of the teeth and are caused by normal wear, foods, dark-colored drinks and tobacco.
Intrinsic stains, on the other hand, form on the interior of the teeth. They are caused by medications, age, trauma and mineral exposure. These stains are harder to remove, but cosmetic dentistry professionals say that professional whitenings can minimize many of these stains.

Although numerous at-home whitening products exist, they are not nearly as effective as professional teeth whitening. When done in a dental office, this whitening procedure often produces a whiter and brighter smile that lasts a long time. Procedure for Teeth Whitening
Some smile-improving procedures are lengthy, complicated and require multiple visits. In contrast, teeth whitening takes place in just under an hour, and there is no recovery time.
During the consultation, you and the dentist will decide how much whiter you want your teeth to be, as this will determine how many steps will be required. To start, the dentist may clean your teeth to remove plaque and tartar and smooth the enamel. Next, a retractor will be placed in your mouth to keep your lips, cheeks and tongue away from the whitening gel.
The dentist will place a gel or resin over your gum tissue to protect it from the whitening solution. The solution will then be applied over the teeth. The solution remains on the teeth for 15 to 20 minutes, and a special light may be used to help activate the bleaching agent. The whitening solution is then washed or suctioned off. More solution is applied until the desired brightness is achieved.
Next, the teeth are rinsed, the gum protector is removed, and the retractor is taken out. The dentist may apply something to minimize sensitive teeth.
