About Invisalign

Many people can find at least one thing they would like to change about their teeth. For some, their complaint is crooked teeth. One of the options to fix this issue in family dentistry is Invisalign clear aligners. This option is especially popular for adults and teens looking for an alternative to traditional metal braces. Of course, not everyone is a good candidate for this straightening method, but there are various benefits for those who are a good fit. If you are looking for Invisalign, our dentists can help you learn more about it.

Benefits of Invisalign

In cosmetic dentistry, the Invisalign treatment is a more subtle way to straighten your teeth. The plastic aligners are sometimes called invisible braces because the trays are clear, making them much harder to see. This option is excellent for older professionals and self-conscious teens.

They can be removed for eating or drinking, which means that food cannot get stuck, making it easy to clean your natural teeth. The straightening time is also generally shorter than with traditional braces.

Good Candidates for Invisalign

Although the thought of wearing removable, clear braces is tempting, it may not be the right choice for everyone wanting to straighten their teeth, especially for those with severely misaligned teeth. While Inviasligns can straighten teeth they cannot correct other dental conditions.

A good candidate is also someone who is responsible. Because they are removable, it may be tempting to keep them off for longer periods. Ideally for the best straightening results, they should be left on for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. A person must also be aware of when the aligners are taken out so they are not accidentally thrown away or lost.

How Invisalign Works

The process used for tooth movement is different for Invisalign than traditional braces, as there are no wires to tighten. The dentist begins by taking a mold or taking a scan of the patient’s teeth. This helps to determine the individual treatment plan and to create the clear aligners. Then, each tray is customized to put pressure on specific places to move the teeth back into their correct alignment.

As the teeth begin to move, the patient will change to a new aligner, which may occur every couple of weeks or so. Each one fits a bit tighter than the last one. This process continues until the teeth are in the correct position.

The treatment times for Invisalign vary, but the average time ranges from nine to 18 months. At this point, the dentist will recommend a retainer for you to wear for a certain time to keep the teeth from moving back to their original position.
