A Basic Guide To Dentures

If you’re looking for a restorative solution to missing teeth, you may be interested in the dentures we have to offer. As a cosmetic dentistry treatment, dentures are artificial teeth that replace teeth removed or lost because of trauma, tooth decay or other oral conditions. This brief guide will tell you all about dentures and how they can help your situation.

A Natural-Looking Option To Replace Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew or speak normally. If your teeth are missing because of decay or another reason, wearing dentures can restore both look and function to your mouth. Although traditional dentures were previously made from plastic or porcelain, a hard resin is used for most modern dentures because of its durability. In the past, dentures would need to be replaced every few years due to cracks or chips, but modern dentures are much stronger.

Dentures are colored to match the remaining natural teeth and held in place by a structure closely resembling the natural gum tissue.

The Types of Dentures Available

The dentures our patients use vary from situation and preference, making it important to consult with one of our providers at ActOn Dentistry to determine which solution is right for you. There are several options available when looking at replacing your missing teeth.

Partial Dentures

When the natural teeth surrounding the gap in the mouth can’t support a dental bridge, or more than one tooth is missing, a partial denture is a solution. These dentures are removable and fastened to nearby teeth to help hold them in place.

Full Dentures

This option is also known as complete dentures since they replace all teeth in your mouth. These are fitted to the gum line and stay in place with a combination of suction and oral adhesive. Like partial dentures, they can be removed and cleaned with the help of a denture cleanser.

Implant-Supported Dentures

The implant acts as an anchor to allow for the denture to snap onto specialized attachments.  having the great stability with dental implants, but allowing for easy removal, makes for simple routine maintenance.

The Care Dentures Require

Regardless of your type, dentures need to be cared for like you would the rest of your existing teeth. A non-abrasive toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush are ideal for brushing the teeth, gums and denture components.  In addition to looking at the surrounding teeth, jawbone and gums, routine dental appointments also help check for damage to the dentures.
