Porcelain Veneers
Veneers made with porcelain are thin shells designed to look like real teeth made in a dental lab. The benefits of porcelain veneers are that they do not stain easily, last a long time, and are natural looking and strong.
The first step of placing porcelain veneers is to remove some of the enamel off the front and sides of each tooth. The dentist then takes a teeth mold and sends the impression to the lab for custom-made veneers. You will also decide which shade of veneers you would like so they best match your natural teeth. While the permanent veneers are manufactured, the dentist may place temporary veneers. At the final visit, the dentist checks the shape and fit of the veneers and makes any adjustments. The veneers are then bonded to the front of the teeth.
Composite Resin Veneers
Composite resin veneers are not made in a lab, as they are made with a tooth-colored filling that bonds to the teeth. The benefits of composite veneers are that they can usually be placed in one visit, less enamel is removed for the procedure and they are easy to repair.
The first step of the procedure is to remove some of the enamel and shape the teeth. Composite material is then sculpted and bonded to the front of each tooth. Next, a special light is used to harden the material. The dentist then smooths and polishes the teeth, so they look natural.
Cost of Veneers
The cost of veneers depends on various factors, such as the number of teeth being fixed and the material used. Composite veneers cost less than porcelain ones, although porcelain veneers last longer than those made of composite material.
Care of Veneers
Although veneers are made with fairly strong materials, they can chip or break if you chew on hard things. Avoid eating ice, hard candies or other hard foods, and do not bite your fingernails or chew on pens. You may want to avoid staining food and drink, such as wine, coffee, cola and berries. You should also care for the veneers as you would your natural teeth. Brush and floss them regularly and visit the dentist twice a year.
