Benefits of Dental Implants

In cosmetic dentistry, implants improve one’s smile by filling in gaps. However, there are other benefits as well. An implant is an artificial tooth root that provides a stable foundation for the crown placed on top, which results in natural looking and functioning teeth that allow the wearer to eat and speak normally. In addition, because the implants are placed in the jawbone, they prevent bone loss, which also prevents long term problems. With the proper care, dental implants also last a long time – often a lifetime.

Characteristics of a Good Candidate

Not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. A good candidate should have good oral hygiene and be free from periodontal disease, tooth decay or other issues. A candidate should have adequate jawbone density and not have a medical condition or take medications that would interfere with the implant procedure healing process. A good candidate should also be patient and understand that it is a long process that may take up to a year to complete the procedure.

The Dental Implant Procedure

There are various steps involved with the implant procedure, and time is needed in between each one for the gum tissue to heal. The dentist will review the treatment plan during the consultation so the patient knows what to expect.

1. Placement of the Implant

The first step is to insert the implants, which will serve as the tooth roots, into the jawbone. This bone will support the implant, making for a strong foundation. Once this is completed, time is needed for the gum tissues to heal and the jawbone to integrate with the implants.

2. Placement of the Healing Cap

After the initial healing, which may take months, a healing cap is placed on top of each implant, preparing the gum tissue for the next step. The healing time for this step is up to two weeks.

3. Abutment Placement

The next step is to place the abutments, which replace the healing caps. The abutment is screwed onto the top of each implant. At this time, a temporary crown is placed on each abutment. This area then needs to heal, which may take four to six weeks.

4. Permanent Crown Placement

During the healing time, permanent crowns will be manufactured in a lab. When it is time, a permanent crown, which is the replacement tooth, replaces each temporary one. The dentist makes any final adjustments and advises the patient as to the proper care of the implants.
